Abridged excerpts from Gurujī’s seminar on Śivasūtra-s in Srinagar:
God cannot be forced. You cannot force God (by any means). Because He is completely Free. You cannot force Śiva because He is Svatantra. He is completely Free. So this theory about the merit (for example): That you get merit, you do charity –for example, you do good actions–, you practice meditation for long, you do many good things. So you attain Liberation because He was moved by your actions. “Ohh, look at you, take Liberation”. But that’s not possible because if that is true, the Freedom of God is completely broken. You understand? “tasya svātantryam khaṇḍayati” (in Sanskrit). You read in the scriptures — “tasya svātantryam khaṇḍayati”. His Freedom (His Svātantrya) is broken (khaṇḍayati). So, that’s not possible.
There is no reason for Śiva to give you liberation. You will get liberation when He wishes so.
The explanation that Trika Shaivism gives about your Liberation — For example, “When will I get Liberation? When? When?”. Is when He wishes so. It’s a strange explanation but it’s very coherent with the Freedom of God. So there is no reason for Him to give you. It’s because He wishes so. Not because you are good or because this or that. No. Because He wishes so. So there is no action you can do to force Śiva to give you Liberation. It’s impossible. Because He is completely Free. In Bhagavadgītā, Kṛṣṇa says something similar. He says: “All the beings are in me, but I am not in any being”. He is so Free that He can say that.
Śiva is completely impartial. He has no preference. Because All this is Him.
And another theory (for example) is that: He will give Liberation to people belonging to a better caste. For example, you belong to a better caste –brahmin or kṣatriya–, you can get Liberation first than the other caste. But No, because that would mean that God is partial. That God (for example) prefers you over other person. It’s impossible. If God descends now… If Śiva descends now, Śiva cannot see any difference. He cannot see: “Oh, I prefer this guy because He is the Guru and the other guys ‘No’ because they are disciples”. It’s not happening. That’s not happening. Because God is completely impartial. He has no preference. Because All this is Him.
Nobody can force Śiva. He appears when He wants to.
So, there is no Liberation because of any merit, any good action or caste or because you look better. Anything. It’s impossible. He cannot be forced. So, He appears when He wants to. Nothing else. There is no way to force Him. Nobody can force Him. You understand? If you understand this, you understand why all this is happening. For example when people came here and offered me Guru Āratī, immediately in me I felt — “He is moving. His Śakti is moving”. It’s immediate. I do nothing. Because He is like this. He is completely Free. So He immediately accepts the Āratī and immediately moves in my head –Śakti feels… very strong–. So, my only action (like a person, like a individual) is to stay calm while the Āratī is offered to the God –the real God, not to the person–. You understand this? So the person is not doing anything. It’s Him only. He is moving, and no way to stop. So I cannot stop (for example) my Śakti and say: “Hey, don’t move now”. No, It’s completely Free. Because this Power of God is completely Free. So, evidently It’s pleased with the Āratī. It’s automatic. It’s automatic.
The Power of God is completely unstoppable. It’s completely Free. This Power never lies to you.
On the other hand, I can be presented the greatest saint in the world –according to those people–, and the Power in my head –in my Sahasrāra– doesn’t move at all. So, all my life as a Yogi, I believed in the Power in my head –Śakti in my head, in Sahasrāra– over the rest. They can tell me: “Oh, this guru is the greatest guru in the universe. You should meet him”. But if I feel nothing, it’s useless. I believe in the Power in my Sahasrāra –His Śakti–. I don’t believe in any other thing. So people in general ask me all the time: “This guru is true? is genuine? this guru is false?”. I cannot say anything because it’s ugly, yes? (except in privacy). But in public I cannot say. It’s not polite. It’s non-polite. But, I believe in this Power more than in people telling me something. Because It’s completely unstoppable. It’s completely Free. This Power never lies to you. So when I feel this Power moving in my head, I know that He is pleased. So, I am glad too. You understand this situation? But you cannot cheat the Power. If your Āratī is false, the Power will never move, and no way. No way.
He is all this universe and more and more. So what action will you do that will be attractive to the Lord?
Liberation is when you realize that you are God. You do your spiritual practices. You have to be completely convinced that no spiritual practice is able to get you Liberation. It’s Him who gives Liberation. So why are you doing spiritual practices? Why all the time I encourage people to do spiritual practices? To kill the time! To kill the time. You can tell me: “Why kill the time? I am meditating”. What is this – “to kill the time”? This is a special teaching in Trika shaivism that’s very different from most of the other systems. Very very different. Other systems tell you that you have to practice in order to attract God. Because if you practice, God is attracted by you. But No. Because God is so great that any action you can do – spiritual or worldly action is useless. Because He is so great. He is all this, and more and more. He is all this universe and more and more. So what action will you do that will be attractive to the Lord? The Lord will say, “Oh, good action”. Nothing.
“I am maybe having some merit”. No, you cannot have merit because no merit can force Him.
This problem with the spiritual practices… “So what’s the point of practicing something?”. If you are Śiva, why do you have to practice something? It’s to kill the time. While He decides what to do. You can tell me: “What is to kill the time? Why? What’s the purpose of this?”, “I am maybe having some merit”. No, you cannot have a merit because no merit can force Him. Anyway you need to practice. Why? In order for your mind not to start to think stupidities. When you have free time, your mind starts to work. For example, you have a lot of free time, your mind starts to work and to say “Oh, I need to move. I need to do something. I need this. I need that”. So you start to do actions. When you do actions, you are generating karma. And if your actions are completely absurd. What is absurd? For example, you are with Guru. But you are fishing. You understand? It’s absurd. If you are with Guru, you don’t go to fish. You understand? You understand, but many people don’t understand. So, they are with Guru but they are somewhere else, doing something else. It’s very obvious. It’s because they are not spiritually mature. So they don’t realize what is happening. They don’t realize Śiva. So for those people, spiritual practices. So in this way, they will be occupied with something better, something spiritual and not all the time moving around.
